The film would be the only Hollywood production to feature kung fu villain actor Hwang Jang-Lee, who is credited in the film as “Jason Hwang”. Street Soldiers is a martial arts film starring and produced by taekwondo master Jun Chong. The USP of ‘Street Soldiers’ lies in its ability to rock the boat and to show how bad can be good sometimes. It was an independent project made on a budget of less than a million but it grossed over $40 million at the box office and won hearts all over. The film made news for destroying 93 cars in a chase sequence lasting about 40 minutes. Since then it has influenced American pop culture in more ways than one. Halicki spearheaded a film that was equally fast and furious in the true sense of the term. If you have watched the Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie starrer film of the same name then as a true film buff you need to check out the 1974 version which inspired the remake. The cast comprises of mostly unknown action worthy performers barring David Hasselhoff whose dominant voice lends a sense of nostalgia and novelty to the short film. It gets the mood, sentiment and look of the 80s era bang on. The film is instantly likable and very in-your-face. Designed as a tribute to the martial arts craze and fast paced police chase flicks of the 80s, it has a video game like appeal to it.
Technically it’s more like a parody but done in an earnest manner. It is the brainchild of David Sandberg who serves both as the director and one of the actors of this 30 minute passion project. ‘Kung Fury’ is the perfect film to begin the list with as it honours the tradition of action films in all its glory.
